Shos‧ta‧ko‧vich, Di‧mi‧tri /ˌʃɒstəˈkəʊvɪtʃ $ ˌʃɑːs-, dɪˈmiːtri/
(1906–75) a Russian composer known especially for his symphonies (symphony) and for his opera, Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk. The Soviet government sometimes disapproved of his music because they considered that it did not express Soviet principles.
