1. Orig., a space between timbers supporting a building. Later, the almost triangular space between one side of the outer curve of an arch and the rectangle formed by the mouldings enclosing it (esp. a wall and ceiling), freq. filled in with ornamental work. Also, the space between the shoulders of adjoining arches and the ceiling or moulding above.
