ˌBlack ˈSash, the an organization of South African women that was started in 1955 to protest against
apartheid (=the system in which black people had few political rights, and black and white people had to live in different areas). The organization was started by white women and they used to wear black
sashes. The Black Sash still exists as a women's
NON-RACIAL humanitarian organization.
