(1938–) the president of Peru from 1990 to 2000. At first he was popular because he dealt with
terrorist groups in a very strong and determined way, but he later became very unpopular when many people believed that he was connected to people who used power in a dishonest or illegal way and was guilty of abusing (
abuse) people's
HUMAN RIGHTS (=treating them in a cruel or violent way). In 2000 he was forced to leave his position. He lived
IN EXILE until he was
extradited in 2007 to face two
trials for murder and forced disappearance. After the first trial, he was given a six-year
PRISON SENTENCE.
