(1951–) a Russian
chess player famous as one of the greatest players of all time. In 1974 the world champion Bobby Fischer of the US would not agree to terms for a match and FIDE, the organization that controls chess, said it would recognise Karpov as world
champion. Karpov was world champion from 1974–1985 and 1993–1999.
