Ma‧kar‧i‧os III, Archbishop /məˌkɑːriɒs ðə ˈθɜːd $ -əʊs ðə ˈθɜːrd/
(1913–77) a religious leader, politician, and the first President of Cyprus. He led the movement which brought the island's independence from Britain in 1960.
