(1622–73) a French actor and writer of plays whose real name was Jean-Baptiste Poquelin. He is best known as a writer of comedies (
comedy) that make fun of human behaviour, such as
Le Misanthrope,
Tartuffe, and
Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme.
