A. noun.
1. Shipbuilding. Any of the long narrow strips of timber etc. fixed longitudinally to the ribs of a ship to keep them in position until the external planking or plating is added. Also, a square timber fastened on the outer side of the launch cradle to stop it slipping outwards. E18.

2. A light spar or beam used in the construction of a gun platform, pontoon bridge, etc. L19.
