Sta‧lin‧grad /ˈstɑːlɪnɡræd/
the old name for the city of Volgograd in the former
Soviet Union, on the River Volga. The city was almost destroyed in the Battle of Stalingrad in 1942–43 and many Russians were killed, when the German army tried unsuccessfully to take control of it.
