Hurricane Katrina
a very strong hurricane that began over the Bahamas in August 2005, moved across southern Florida, entered the Gulf of Mexico, and caused damage along the Gulf Coast. The highest number of lives lost and the most severe damage took place in New Orleans, Louisiana where the flood protection system failed. The government was severely criticized for the way it dealt with the disaster.
