Mont‧ser‧rat /ˌmɒntsəˈræt $ ˌmɑːnt-/
an island in the Caribbean Sea, one of the Leeward Islands, which belongs to the UK. Capital: Plymouth. In 1997 a volcano on the island erupted (erupt), sending out lava (=hot liquid rock) and ash (=powder that remains after something has been burnt) over a wide area, and this forced many people to leave the island.
